Automotive Calculators and Tire Size Tools
Automotive calculators on TestTalkHQ: tire size vs speedometer error, gear ratio & RPM, horsepower & torque (5,252 constant), braking / stopping distance, trip fuel cost, MPG (fill-up and EPA combined), trailer tongue weight (10–15% band), towing capacity (GCWR headroom), wheel offset / backspacing, coolant mix ratio (EG/water freeze & boil at 15 psi), and 12V DC accessory wire gauge (voltage drop). Shop starting points — not load, dyno, SAE, hitch, or chassis-wiring certificates.

The size on the sidewall is a geometry recipe. Width, aspect ratio, and rim build overall diameter. Change diameter and the speedometer, odometer, and wheel-speed sensors all move with circumference. This hub is rolling-diameter math and the reasons people change sizes — not a structural-safety calculator and not a substitute for a tire tech checking load index, speed rating, and fender clearance.

Tire Size & Speedometer Error Calculator
Overall diameter %, true vs indicated speed, and revolutions per mile from two size codes (e.g. 225/65R17 vs 245/65R17). Flags changes outside the common ±3% fitment band. Starting point — not a load or rubbing certificate.
Engine RPM at a road speed — or road speed at a target RPM — from tire overall diameter, axle (final drive) ratio, and transmission gear. Uses the published 336 constant. Feed diameter from the tire size calculator when you only have a size code.
Horsepower from torque and RPM — or torque from horsepower and RPM — using the published 5,252 constant. Feed cruise RPM from the gear ratio calculator when you only know road speed.
Reaction distance plus braking distance from speed, driver reaction time, and a published surface friction coefficient. Physics estimate under assumed conditions — not a guarantee of actual stopping distance.
Gallons needed, total fuel cost, and cost per mile from trip distance, mpg, and $/gallon. Round-trip doubles distance; number of trips rolls a commute into a weekly or monthly total.
Actual mpg from miles and gallons, or EPA-style combined mpg from city and highway using the 40 CFR §600.210-12 weighted harmonic mean. Pair with trip fuel cost for dollars.
10–15% target tongue-weight range from loaded trailer weight. Compare a measured scale reading or estimate from cargo ahead/behind the axle. Flags sway (too low) and rear-overload (too high) risk.
GVWR minus curb, passengers, cargo, and tongue weight. Shows total payload capacity and available remaining, with a hard over-GVWR warning when remaining is negative. Complementary to the towing (GCWR) calculator.
GCWR minus curb, passengers, and cargo. Compare to the advertised max tow rating; the lower number wins. Hitch class is a separate hard ceiling. Starting point — not a certificate.
Minimum copper AWG from continuous amp draw, one-way feet, 12V or 24V, and an allowable voltage-drop percent (default 3%). Actual volts, actual %, pass/fail. Planning aid — not a SAE or ABYC certificate.
Convert listed wheel width plus ET (mm) into backspacing (in), or a taped backspace into ET. Hub-to-inner-edge distance and a rough fender vs frame clearance flag. Starting point — not a mock-fit.
Quarts/liters of concentrate and distilled water for a target freeze/boil point (ethylene glycol, 15 psi). Fresh fill or top-off from a measured concentration. Never exceed 70% concentrate.
Static CR from the four volumes you measure — chamber, head gasket, deck and piston dish or dome — plus total displacement, quench, dynamic CR from the seat intake closing angle, and the gasket thickness or chamber volume that reaches a target ratio. Defaults reproduce HOT ROD's published worked example.
How many straps or chains a load actually needs. Runs the two federal rules together — aggregate working load limit of half the article weight (393.106(d)) and the minimum count set by length (393.110) — and tells you which one is binding. Working load limits from the 393.108 tables, with the weakest-component rule in 393.108(a) applied.
No. The calculator uses the geometry of the size code. Brand-to-brand measured diameter, wheel width, offset, load index, and speed rating still need a human and the door placard.
Why is this not under HVAC or carpentry?
It is the first automotive vertical. HVAC stays on duct, static pressure, superheat, and delta-T. Carpentry stays on stairs, rafters, and spans. Tire diameter is a vehicle problem.
Will more automotive calculators show up here?
Yes. This hub is the index for automotive tools as they ship. Tire size, gear ratio & RPM, and horsepower & torque form the engine-performance path. Braking / stopping distance, trailer tongue weight, and towing capacity (GCWR headroom) are the towing-safety tools. Wheel offset / backspacing is the custom-wheel geometry conversion. Trip fuel cost prices the miles. The MPG calculator measures fill-up economy or computes EPA combined. 12V accessory wire gauge covers voltage drop on lights, winches, and audio — not NEC 120 V homeruns.
