Geared Wrong for Tire Size: Troubleshooting

Signs the engine and tires are fighting each other — lugging at low RPM, excessive highway RPM, poor fuel economy — and how a re-gear or tire change fixes it

After a tire size change, the speedometer is the obvious complaint. The less obvious one is gearing: the engine no longer sits where the manufacturer aimed it in the power band. Use the gear ratio & RPM calculator to quantify the gap, and the tire size calculator for the diameter that feeds it.

How the math works: guide. Re-gear vs live with it: comparison. HP from torque at that RPM: horsepower & torque calculator.

Starting point only. These pages explain how tire diameter, axle ratio, and transmission gear share one RPM equation. They are not a dyno sheet, ring-and-pinion setup procedure, or warranty argument with a shop.

Engine Lugging at Low RPM

Taller tires (or a numerically lower axle) drop cruise and pull RPM. Under load — merge, grade, trailer — the engine sits below where it makes torque. Symptoms: lazy throttle response, rattling under load, hunting for a lower gear on an automatic. Confirm with the calculator: if top-gear RPM at 65 mph is well under ~1,800–2,000 on a gas truck that used to cruise higher, you gave away gearing.

Gear Ratio & RPM Shop Gear

When you change tires or re-gear the axle, you need a way to check engine speed, set ring-and-pinion contact, measure backlash, and fill the housing with the right oil. These are the tools that turn the calculator numbers into a driveway job.

Digital laser tachometer

NEIKO 20713A Digital Laser Tachometer

Non-contact RPM check on a pulley, harmonic balancer, or marked flywheel. Use it to verify the calculator’s cruise RPM against what the engine is actually turning.

Gear marking compound

Richmond Gear 5500011 Gear Marking Compound

Yellow paste for drive and coast tooth patterns after a ring-and-pinion install. Pattern tells you pinion depth and backlash before you button up the cover.

Dial indicator with magnetic base

iGaging Dial Indicator with Magnetic Base

Measure ring-gear backlash and runout after a re-gear. Mag base sticks to the housing so you can rock the ring gear and read thousandths without holding the indicator by hand.

Synthetic 75W-90 gear oil

Royal Purple Max Gear 75W-90

GL-5 synthetic for hypoid differentials after a ratio change. Fill to the cover plug — not to the brim of the housing — and add the friction modifier your limited-slip needs if it is not already in the bottle.

Digital timing light

Innova 3568 Digital Timing Light

Advance display and tach readout for verifying idle and cruise RPM on engines where the dash tach is wrong or missing. Pair it with the calculator’s predicted RPM at a known road speed.

Excessive RPM at Highway Speed

Shorter tires (or a numerically higher axle left over from rock-crawling gears) raise RPM. Symptoms: loud cabin, hotter oil, worse MPG, and an automatic that will not stay in top gear. If the calculator shows 3,200+ RPM at 70 mph in a near-1:1 gear, you are geared short for that tire.

Poor Fuel Economy After a Tire Swap

Economy follows RPM and load. Taller tires can help if the engine stays in a efficient band — or hurt if the engine lugs and the transmission downshifts constantly. Shorter tires almost always cost highway MPG. Measure diameter change and predicted RPM before blaming injectors or a “bad tank.”

How a Re-Gear or Tire Change Fixes It

Restore diameter toward stock if the tire was a fashion choice and you hate the RPM change. Re-gear the axle if you need the taller tire for clearance or load. Target the cruise RPM you had before (or the RPM your engine likes) with the calculator’s reverse solve. Pair that decision with the tire calculator’s ±3% speedometer band so you know what the cluster will do.

Mixed diameters on AWD/4WD are a different failure. That is binding and sensor conflict, not just cruise RPM. See tire size mismatch troubleshooting.

FAQ

Can a tune alone fix wrong gearing?

A tune can shift points and torque management. It cannot put mechanical ratio back. Geometry still wins at a steady 70 mph in lockup.

Does tire pressure change RPM?

Slightly — pressure changes effective rolling radius. Use cold placard pressure when comparing to the calculator.
