BuyWhy the 10–15% band matters for sway physics, how to weigh with a bathroom scale and lever, and how cargo placement moves the reading
The trailer tongue weight calculator turns loaded trailer weight into a target band and flags a measured or estimated reading. This page is the why and the how: sway physics at low tongue weight, bathroom-scale lever method, and cargo moves that raise or lower the coupler force.
On-road symptoms: troubleshooting. When a weight-distribution hitch is warranted: comparison. Automotive index: hub.
Have a loaded trailer weight?Get the 10–15% target band and compare a scale reading or cargo estimate.
Open Calculator →Tongue weight is the downward force on the hitch ball. With enough weight ahead of the trailer axle, displacing the rear of the trailer sideways requires lifting that forward mass — the setup resists sway. With too little tongue weight, the trailer’s mass sits behind the axle like a pendulum. A small side force (crosswind, a lane change, a bump) can grow into oscillation at highway speed.
Industry bumper-pull guidance keeps tongue weight near 10–15% of total loaded trailer weight. Sherline’s trailer loading guide states that ideal band and calls ~12% a practical target. Fastway’s SIMPLE WEIGH guidance uses the same 10–15% range. SAE J2807 tow-rating tests often assume about 10% tongue weight when establishing published capacities — that is a test baseline, not permission to run chronically light.

The calculator tells you the 10–15% target range and whether a measured reading is too light (sway risk) or too heavy (rear-axle / hitch overload). A dedicated tongue scale replaces bathroom-scale guessing on heavier trailers; wheel chocks keep the trailer from rolling while you measure; a rated extinguisher belongs in any tow kit.
Hydraulic tongue scale with a direct pounds gauge. Measure the loaded coupler on level ground, then compare the reading to the calculator’s 10–15% target band for your gross trailer weight.

Chock the trailer wheels before you drop the coupler onto a scale or jack a tongue for cargo moves. A rolling trailer ruins the reading and is a crush hazard.

Towing multiplies fire risk (brakes, bearings, electrical). Keep a rated extinguisher reachable in the tow vehicle — not buried behind cargo in the trailer.

Dedicated tongue scale. Chock the wheels on level ground. Lower the coupler onto the scale (or jack foot pad) at hitch-ball height. Read pounds directly. Re-check after every cargo change.
Commercial / CAT-style method. Weigh the tow vehicle alone, then weigh it again with the trailer hitched but trailer wheels off the scale. The difference is tongue weight.
Bathroom scale (light trailers only). Direct reading works if tongue weight is under the scale’s capacity (often ~300 lb). Heavier tongues need a lever so the scale sees a fraction of the load.
Common 4:1 setup: a sturdy board or pipe with the fulcrum one-quarter of the way from the scale end. Rest the coupler over the fulcrum. Multiply the scale reading by four. Example: scale shows 150 lb → tongue weight ≈ 600 lb. Keep the setup level, chock the wheels, and never stand under a suspended tongue.
Move heavy items toward the coupler (ahead of the axle) to raise tongue weight. Move them rearward to lower it. Toolboxes, batteries, and generators on the tongue add base tongue weight before any bed cargo. Loose gravel or scrap piled at the rear of a dump/utility bed is a classic too-light setup.
The calculator’s estimate mode uses statics about the axle: empty tongue weight plus (forward cargo × its lever arm minus aft cargo × its lever arm) divided by coupler-to-axle length. Use it to plan a rearrange, then confirm with a scale.
It is the low end of the common bumper-pull band and the figure many tow ratings assume in testing. Many guides prefer ~12% as a stability sweet spot if hitch and payload allow.
WD spring bars redistribute axle loads so the tow vehicle sits level. Static tongue weight at the coupler is still the force you measured — and it still counts against hitch and payload ratings. See WD vs standard hitch.
Pin weight is typically a higher percentage of trailer weight (often ~15–25%). Do not apply the bumper-pull 10–15% band to a fifth-wheel without manufacturer guidance.
