BuyCity vs highway mpg, cold weather and short trips, aggressive driving, and underinflated tires — the usual reasons the receipt beats the spreadsheet
The trip fuel cost calculator multiplies the mpg you typed. If that mpg was a highway sticker and the trip was January errands, the pump will win. This page is the gap between arithmetic and the tank.
How to measure real mpg: guide. Which EPA number belongs on which trip: city vs highway mpg.
Recalculate with a measured mpg.Fill-up math in, pump-price dollars out.
Open Calculator →EPA labels print city, highway, and combined for a reason. Stop-and-go, idle, and low average speed crush mpg relative to a steady 65 mph cruise. If you typed highway mpg for a downtown loop, the calculator is not wrong — the input is. Use city (or fill-up mpg from that loop) for errands, highway for an interstate, and a measured mix for a commute that is both. Details: city vs highway mpg.

The calculator turns miles, mpg, and pump price into gallons and dollars. A gas can covers a reserve, a pressure gauge and inflator keep rolling resistance honest, and an OBD reader helps you grab the trip-computer mpg you actually plug in.
Reserve fuel for a long trip or a remote fill. The calculator tells you gallons needed; the can is how you carry a measured extra without guessing at the pump.

Underinflated tires raise rolling resistance and burn more fuel than the mpg you typed. Check cold PSI against the door sticker before you trust a commute-cost number.

Set door-sticker pressure after a temperature swing. Soft tires are a common reason actual dollars run higher than gallons × pump price from window-sticker mpg.

A cold engine runs rich until it is warm. A three-mile winter trip can spend most of its miles in that window. Cabin heat, heated seats, and winter-blend gasoline also move the needle. The calculator assumes constant mpg. Short, cold trips are the opposite of constant. Average those tanks separately from summer highway tanks.
Hard launches, late braking, and high cruise speed burn fuel the window sticker never saw. Aero drag rises with the square of speed; a 75 mph habit is not a 65 mph EPA highway cycle. If fill-up mpg is several points under the sticker only on weeks you drive it like you stole it, the calculator will match the receipt as soon as you type the lower mpg.
Low pressure increases rolling resistance. A few PSI under the door sticker is a quiet mpg tax every mile. Check cold pressure with a gauge, not a kick. A size change that grows overall diameter also changes how fast the odometer (and sometimes the trip computer) counts miles — and a much taller or wider tire can add drag. Run original vs proposed size in the tire size & speedometer error calculator before you blame the fuel calculator. Highway RPM after a tall tire without a re-gear: gear ratio & RPM calculator.
No. Gallons = miles ÷ mpg, cost = gallons × price. If the receipt is higher, the mpg or the miles (or the price you typed) did not match the tank.
Only as a lower mpg. Type the fill-up number from a week with the box on. Do not keep using the naked-car sticker.
Extra hardware usually costs mpg. Measure it. Do not subtract a forum percentage from the EPA label and call it science.
