Fifth roofing vertical on TestTalkHQ. Materials takeoff, attic ventilation NFA (IRC R806.2), gutter drainage (IPC Equation 11-1), ice-barrier coverage (IRC R905.1.2), and balanced roof snow load (ASCE 7-16) are different jobs. Snow load is structural — same safety framing as the carpentry span calculators. Starting point, not a bid.

Buying shingles? Footprint or taped planes, X/12 pitch, waste, then squares and bundles. Ventilating the attic? Attic floor area, then net free area. Sizing the trough? Plan area and rainfall, then gpm. Protecting the eave from ice dams? A coverage band inward from the wall line. Sizing snow on that roof? Look up ground snow load, then convert with ASCE 7-16 — that psf is a structural input to joists and beams, not a square count. Do not feed roof-surface squares into the ventilation, gutter, ice-barrier, or snow-load tools.

Roofing Square & Shingle Bundle Calculator
Squares (1 = 100 sq ft), shingle bundles, and underlayment rolls from length × width or total area, X/12 pitch multiplier, and waste. Not rafter layout, not attic NFA, not gutter flow, not the ice-barrier eave band. Eave length from this roof is what the ice-barrier calculator wants.
IRC R806.2 net free area: 1:150 default, 1:300 only when the exception qualifies. Total, intake, and exhaust NFA in square inches. Heat in the attic is a real ice-dam cause — membrane at the eave does not cool the deck.
IPC Equation 11-1 flow from plan area, rainfall intensity, and SMACNA Table 1-1 pitch factor. 5" vs 6" K-style against Table 1106.6, plus downspout count. Ice in the trough is a symptom, not this tool’s output.
IRC R905.1.2 coverage band: from the lowest roof edge to 24 in inside the exterior wall line, converted along the slope. Net area, 36 in courses, rolls from published 200 sq ft coverage. Required where Table R301.2 designates ice-dam history — not a nationwide climate-zone map.
Felt or synthetic roll count from roof area, IRC single vs double coverage on low slopes (under 4:12), and waste. Does not include ice-and-water shield at eaves — separate calculator.
ASCE 7-16 balanced roof snow load: pf = 0.7 Ce Ct Is pg, then Cs for pitch. Planning estimate — look up pg, do not guess it. Real input to joist and beam span decisions. Not a shingle takeoff.
Panel count and total linear footage from manufacturer net coverage width, custom mill-cut panel length, pitch multiplier, and waste. Standing seam / R-panel / corrugated presets β not a shingle-bundle worksheet.
How far a standing seam or through-fastened panel grows and shrinks over its run, and how much of that a single clip has to take in each direction from the temperature you installed at. Steel, aluminum, copper and stainless, eave-pinned or mid-pinned, with the longest run your clip travel supports and the expansion joints a longer one needs.
Ridge + hip linear feet into hip-and-ridge bundles. Default 25 ft/bundle (GAF Seal-A-Ridge), editable coverage and waste. Separate from field shingles sold by the square.
Eave + rake linear feet and 10-ft stock pieces with 3 in IRC R905.2.8.5 end-joint overlap. Planning only β some jurisdictions (e.g. Minnesota) delete the drip-edge section.
Squares or sq ft, 3-tab vs architectural, 4-nail vs 6-nail high-wind, waste, and nail length by 7/16, 1/2, or 5/8 in decking. Same 100 sq ft square as the shingle takeoff.
Convert rise-in-12, degrees, or percent slope into the other two units, then multiply plan footprint by the Pythagorean roof-area factor. Not rafter layout — that is the framing calculator next to this card.
Common rafter length, X/12, plumb and birdsmouth. Lock pitch here, then use it on the shingle takeoff, the SMACNA gutter factor, and the ice-barrier slope conversion. Commons only — not hip/valley sticks.
Why isn’t there a standalone ground-snow-load chart page?
Ground snow load is location-specific (ASCE 7 maps / Table R301.2 / the Hazard Tool). A static table of cities would be wrong the next county over. Ce / Ct / Is already live as radios; Cs is a continuous function of pitch. A sixth page reprinting those factors would not add a reference the calculator and comparison do not already give you.
Can I use ground snow load as the roof load, or as a joist-table live load?
No. Convert pg with ASCE 7-16 to a balanced roof snow load. IRC tables in the joist span calculator and deck beam span calculator assume 40 psf live / 10 psf dead unless you are on a snow-country row. Five different numbers from the same building: squares, attic floor, gutter plan area, ice-barrier band, and snow psf.
Does this replace a roofing contractor?
No. Complex roofs, ice-and-water at valleys, local Table R301.2, fascia condition, and walking the soffits still need a crew. These tools are arithmetic on the numbers you enter.
