Metal Roofing vs Asphalt Shingles

Lifespan, cost, weight, and install complexity — then pick the calculator that matches the material

This is the decision point before either takeoff. Metal uses the panel calculator. Asphalt uses the shingle bundle calculator. Same pitch multiplier; different unit of sale.

Coverage and mill-cut lengths: metal guide. Estimating mistakes: troubleshooting. Roofing hub: hub.

Coverage width is not overall sheet width. Confirm the manufacturer data sheet. These pages explain metal panel takeoffs (standing seam, R-panel/PBR, corrugated/5V). They are not a permit, a trim list, or a substitute for the published net coverage on your profile.

Real Tradeoffs

  • Lifespan: Metal systems are commonly marketed for multi-decade service; asphalt architectural shingles are often in the 20–30 year warranty conversation depending on product and climate.
  • Cost: Metal materials and specialty labor usually cost more up front; asphalt wins on first-cost for many residential reroofs.
  • Weight: Metal is typically lighter per square than asphalt thick laminates — useful on some structures, irrelevant if the deck or snow load governs.
  • Install complexity: Standing seam needs seaming skill and clips; exposed fastener is more familiar but through-fastens the weather surface. Asphalt needs nailing patterns, starter, ridge, and valley method — different truck, different waste model.

Which Calculator to Open

Pick the material first. Then open the matching takeoff. Do not force metal into a bundle worksheet or asphalt into a coverage-width panel count.

FAQ

Do both need ice & water shield?

Cold-climate eaves and valleys often do regardless of covering. Run the ice & water calculator.

Does metal remove snow-load concerns?

No — structure still sees roof snow load. Use the snow load calculator.

Metal Panel Install Gear

A coverage-width takeoff is a number until you cut, seam, and fasten the panels. Snips, a hand seamer, and painted hex-washer screws are how standing seam and exposed-fastener roofs leave the truck.

Metal roofing hex washer head screws

Metal Roofing Screws

Self-tapping hex-washer head screws with sealing washers for exposed-fastener / R-panel installs. Standing seam uses concealed clips instead — still keep stitch screws for trim.
