Ridge Cap Shingle Guide

How to turn ridge and hip linear footage into hip-and-ridge bundles — and why coverage depends on brand exposure

The ridge cap calculator does the arithmetic. This page is the method: how ridge/hip caps differ from field shingles, why GAF Seal-A-Ridge and TimberTex print different feet per bundle, and how to apply the result on the roof.

Problems: troubleshooting. Cut 3-tab vs pre-scored: comparison. Field squares: shingle bundle calculator. Hub: roofing tools.

Ridge and Hip Caps Are Not Field Shingles

Field asphalt shingles are sold and estimated by the square — 100 square feet of roof surface. That is what the roofing square & shingle bundle calculator covers.

Ridge and hip caps are a different SKU. Manufacturers sell purpose-made hip-and-ridge (ridge cap) products by the bundle, with coverage printed in linear feet at a stated exposure. You measure the ridge runs and hip runs, convert to feet with waste, then divide by that printed coverage. Mixing the two takeoffs is how crews run short of caps on day three with a full pallet of field bundles still on the truck.

The same product usually covers both ridges and hips. A simple gable has ridge only. A hip roof adds four (or more) hip runs that need the same cap material along the angled edges.

The Linear-Footage-to-Bundles Method

  1. Measure every ridge run that gets caps (main ridge plus any secondary ridges).
  2. Measure every hip run that gets the same product. Enter 0 hips for a pure gable.
  3. Read the coverage per bundle on the wrapper you will buy (default planning number: 25 ft).
  4. Add waste (5% is a common starting point; more on complex hips and cut-heavy jobs).
  5. Divide and always round up to the next full bundle.
total lf = (ridge ft + hip ft) × (1 + waste%/100)
bundles = ceil(total lf ÷ coverage per bundle)
Worked example — 60 ft ridge, 20 ft hip, 25 ft/bundle, 5% waste (60 + 20) × 1.05 = 84 linear ft. 84 ÷ 25 = 3.36 → order 4 bundles.

Run the same numbers in the calculator to confirm. Yards do not sell 0.36 of a hip-and-ridge bundle.

Why Coverage Varies — GAF Published Specs

Coverage is exposure-driven. Shorter exposure means more pieces (and more linear feet) from the same piece count; longer exposure covers more per piece but fewer total feet per bundle.

  • GAF Seal-A-Ridge: GAF publishes roughly 25 linear feet per bundle based on 45 pieces at a 6⅔ inch exposure. That is the most common planning default on TestTalkHQ and in many yards.
  • GAF TimberTex and similar wider-profile hip-and-ridge products use a longer exposure (TimberTex is commonly cited at an 8 inch exposure). Wider exposure = fewer linear feet per bundle than Seal-A-Ridge. Do not assume 25 ft if the wrapper says otherwise.

Industry-wide, hip-and-ridge bundles generally land somewhere around 20–33 linear feet per bundle depending on brand and exposure. The calculator’s coverage field is editable so any brand works — the default of 25 is a Seal-A-Ridge starting point, not a law of physics.

Always read the wrapper on the pallet you will install.Published marketing numbers and the number printed on the specific lot should match what you enter. Dye lots and regional SKUs sometimes differ.

Applying the Result on the Job

Manufacturer instructions win over generic advice. In broad practice for asphalt hip-and-ridge:

  • Install a starter piece at the beginning of each ridge or hip run (often a cut piece or a designated starter per the instructions).
  • Work from the ends toward the center on many ridge details so the final piece can be cut and seated cleanly — or follow the sequence your manufacturer prints if it differs.
  • On hips, start at the eave and work toward the ridge peak unless the instructions say otherwise.
  • Fasten per the listed nail count and placement. Cap blow-off is usually under-fastening or wrong nail length, not “bad bundles.” Field nail counts live in the roofing nail calculator; caps still need their own pattern.
  • If a continuous ridge vent sits under the caps, the vent length still follows the ridge — size attic NFA separately with the attic ventilation calculator.
Order field and caps as separate lines. The square takeoff and the linear-foot takeoff are related jobs on the same roof, not the same math.

FAQ

Can I just cut 3-tab shingles into caps?

Sometimes on 3-tab roofs. On architectural/laminated field shingles, hand-cut strips crack and underperform purpose-made caps. Full decision: cut vs architectural ridge cap.

Do I include starter strips in the linear footage?

The waste percentage is meant to cover starters, cutoffs, and damaged pieces. If your manufacturer requires a full starter course that eats measurable length, bump waste or add a foot or two explicitly.

What about drip edge and underlayment?

Separate takeoffs: drip edge and underlayment. Caps go on after the field and edge details are right.

Ridge Cap Guide — Job Gear

Linear footage and bundles are only the order. On the ridge you still need a coil nailer, chalk line, hook knife for cuts and starters, and a tear-off shovel if you are stripping the old caps first.

Coil roofing nailer

BOSTITCH RN46-1 Coil Roofing Nailer

Coil nailer for field and cap fastening. Cap nails still need correct placement per the manufacturer — the gun just keeps the pace up on long ridge runs.
