BuyMaximum tabulated beam span from IRC 2021 Table R507.5(1) — a starting point, not a final design
Look up the maximum allowable deck beam span between posts for Southern Pine, Douglas Fir-Larch / Hem-Fir / SPF, or Redwood / Western Cedars / Ponderosa / Red Pine. Pick 1-ply, 2-ply, or 3-ply of 2x6 through 2x12, then the effective deck joist span the beam carries (6 through 18 ft). Values are IRC 2021 Table R507.5(1) at 40 psf live / 10 psf dead, L/360, No. 2, wet service. This is a starting point based on that standard table, not a substitute for local code, the lumber grade stamp, or a licensed engineer.

Size the joists first. Then tell this tool which species group you are buying, how many 2x plies you will nail up, the size of each ply, and the effective deck joist span that beam has to carry. The result is the maximum tabulated post-to-post beam span from IRC 2021 Table R507.5(1). Read the yellow flag on the result: it is a starting point. Confirm the stamp, the adopted code, and whether your loads actually match 40 psf live / 10 psf dead.

A beam span table is a lookup, not a calculation. Table R507.5(1) publishes maximum post-to-post spans for built-up 2x beams under a stated live load, dead load, and deflection limit, keyed to how much joist span the beam carries. This tool returns that published cell. It does not check post size, footings, connectors, cantilever of the beam, or snow-country rows.
40 psf live load, 10 psf dead load, L/360 at main span, No. 2 grade, wet service, Table R507.5(1). Snow is not assumed concurrent. 50 / 60 / 70 psf ground-snow tables exist as R507.5(2) through R507.5(4) and are not in this dropdown. Select Structural, #1, and #3 are not in this dropdown.
Snow country, a hot tub, a roof over the deck, beams past the table, LVL or steel, and anything the inspector will not accept as prescriptive. Those jobs need listed product data or a licensed engineer. Treat every number here as a conversation starter with the code book, not a green light to skip a post.

Span tables tell you how far a beam may run between posts. The square, tape, and level still have to match the stamp and the bay you are actually framing.
Layout post bays after the table says the beam reaches. Same square you will use on the deck stairs off that frame.

Existing sag at midspan shows up here before you argue with a span table. Sight the beam, then compare to the tabulated number.

Cut the beam to the span you actually have, not to a wish. If the table does not reach, add a post, upsize, or call an engineer — do not sneak an extra foot.

When the same deck gets stairs, lock rise and run on the square. Beam span and stringer layout are different jobs.
