Deck Beam Span Troubleshooting

Midspan bounce, sag, and what changes if you add a post instead of upsizing the beam

An undersized deck beam rarely fails as a Hollywood collapse on day one. It dishes at midspan, bounces when someone walks the middle bay, and racks the post connections. Compare the existing ply count, size, species, joist run, and post spacing to the deck beam span calculator and the published grids first. Then decide whether a post, more plies, or an engineer is the honest fix.

How the table columns work: guide. Why a joist cell does not save a beam: comparison.

Starting point only. These pages explain standard IRC 2021 deck beam tables. They are not a substitute for the adopted local code, the grade stamp on the lumber you will install, or a licensed engineer when the job is outside ordinary prescriptive rows.

Signs of an Undersized Beam

Bounce at midspan. Standing in the middle of the beam bay, not out on a joist cantilever, you feel the deck pump. Live-load deflection is why the beam table uses L/360. A beam that “worked” at a sloppier limit will feel cheap even if it never cracks. Bounce on the beam is not the same complaint as bounce on a long joist — check both tables. Joists: joist span calculator.

Permanent dish / sag. A line on the underside of the beam shows a set. The member took load it could not quite give back. Check for overspan, a missing post, water at the post cap, or a load that is not 40 psf (a spa, a roof, a masonry planter).

Split plies and rolled connections. Undersized built-up beams rack. Look at the nail pattern between plies (two rows of 10d at 16" o.c. is the code minimum), the post-to-beam bolts, and whether one ply is bearing while the other is hanging in air. A beam that misses Table R507.5(1) is also a footing and lateral-load problem, not just a span problem.

Joists can be legal and the beam still wrong. A 2x10 joist at 16" o.c. can hit Table R507.6 and still dump onto a 2-ply 2x8 that cannot reach the next post. Diagnose the member that is moving.

How to Check Existing Framing Against the Table

  1. Measure post-to-post clear span of the beam — face of post to face of post, not center-to-center of the footings unless that is what you will compare.
  2. Count plies and read the size. Two 2x10s is 2-ply 2x10. A single 2x10 is 1-ply.
  3. Read the stamp: species and grade. No stamp: do not assume #2 Southern Pine.
  4. Measure the joist span the beam carries (ledger to beam, or both sides for a center beam). Convert to effective span with Table R507.5(5) if needed. How: guide.
  5. Look up the cell in the calculator. If existing post spacing is longer than the cell, the beam does not meet that prescriptive row. That is the fact.
Worked missExisting: Southern Pine 2-ply 2x10, joists 12 ft, posts at 8′-0″. Table R507.5(1) allows 7′-4″ at a 12 ft effective joist span. The bay is 8 inches past the cell. A 3-ply 2x10 at the same column reaches 9′-2″. Adding a post that splits 8′-0″ into two 4-foot bays also lands inside the 2-ply cell. Both are prescriptive conversations. Leaving it because “it has been up for years” is not.

What Changes If You Add a Post Instead of Upsizing the Beam

The table is a trade: more joist load (or longer beam span) wants more wood or more posts. You can move either axis.

  • Add a post. You shorten the beam span. The same 2-ply 2x10 that fails at 8′-0″ under a 12 ft joist run is legal at 7′-4″ or less. You buy a post, a footing, and a connector. You keep the beam you have. You also add a obstacle in the yard and another hole in the frost line.
  • Upsize the beam. More plies or a deeper 2x. A 3-ply 2x10 or a 2-ply 2x12 can clear a wider bay so you do not put a post in front of a basement door. You buy lumber and you have to get the new assembly onto the existing posts with full bearing on every ply.
  • Reduce joist span. A dropped beam moved closer to the ledger, or a second beam, shrinks the effective-span column and suddenly the original beam reaches. That is a framing change, not a hardware change.

Adding a post is often cheaper in materials and more expensive in excavation and in the way the space under the deck feels. Upsizing the beam is the opposite. Neither one is a sister 2 feet long in the middle of the bay. Stairs off a repaired deck still need their own check: deck stair calculator.

Fixes That Are Real vs Theater

Real: shorter beam span (new post), more plies nailed to the R507.5 pattern, deeper members, a designed LVL, new footings sized for the new post, blocking where the code already required it.

Theater: a 2-foot sister on the bottom of the beam, extra nails in one ply, “we always use double 2x8s around here,” a midspan prop on a patio paver, and running the joist table on the beam.

A prop on a stone is not a post. A post without a footing is not a post the table assumes. Buying replacement stock: board foot calculator.

Look up the cell before you add lumber. If the 2-ply never reached, a third ply might. Check the table instead of guessing.

FAQ

The deck bounces but the beam table says it is fine.

Then look at the joists, missing blocking, a long 24" o.c. bay, or a load that is not 40 psf. Feel is not always the beam — but the beam is the first check when the bounce is in the middle of the post bay.

Can I just bolt a third ply onto one side?

A third ply only counts if it has full bearing on the posts and is nailed into the assembly the way R507.5 describes. A decorative 2x hanging past the post cap is not a 3-ply beam.

When is this an engineer job for sure?

No stamp, visible structural splits, a spa or other point load, snow-country decks past the 40 psf row, rot at the post cap, and any span past the published cell that you cannot shorten. Do not invent a number.

Framing Layout Gear

Confirm the stamp and the bay. Then layout. The table does not replace a square or a level on an existing sag.

Mark post layout after the table says the beam reaches. Same square for the deck stairs off that frame.
