BuySpecies × ply × size × effective joist span grids from IRC 2021 Table R507.5(1) — bookmarkable reference, still a starting point
These grids are the same cells the deck beam span calculator and the deck post spacing calculator return. Values are IRC 2021 Table R507.5(1) for 40 psf live load, 10 psf dead load, L/360, No. 2, wet service. Columns are effective deck joist span length in feet. They are not local law by themselves.
How to use a cell: guide. Beam vs joist: comparison. Existing sag: troubleshooting. Joists: IRC joist span tables.
Look up one combination.Species, plies, size, effective joist span.

Values transcribed from IRC 2021 Table R507.5(1) (Maximum Deck Beam Span — 40 PSF Live Load) as published in the Massachusetts Residential Code, 10th edition (IRC 2021 based) on UpCodes. The same cells were cross-checked against Pennsylvania Residential Code 2021 and Utah Residential Code 2021 Table R507.5(1) on UpCodes. No values were interpolated. Southern Pine 2-ply and 3-ply rows also match independently published 2021 IRC R507.5 excerpts.
Not included: Tables R507.5(2) through R507.5(4) (50 / 60 / 70 psf ground snow), Table R507.5(5) factor math inside the grid (convert first, then pick a column), solid 3x/4x timber rows from older editions, Select Structural / #1 / #3, or cantilever of the beam itself (limited to adjacent span / 4). If your job needs those, open the adopted code or hire a licensed engineer.

One combination, not the whole grid?Use the calculator. The yellow starting-point flag is on the result.
Open Calculator →Because a crew comparing 2-ply vs 3-ply at two joist columns wants the grid. The calculator is for one cell. Both are starting points.
Because Table R507.5(1) prints them as one row with the incising factor included. Redwood / cedars / ponderosa / red pine are a different row.

Confirm the stamp and the bay. Then layout. The table does not replace a square or a level on an existing sag.
Mark post layout after the table says the beam reaches. Same square for the deck stairs off that frame.

Quick 90s and ply checks. The calculator still wants species from the stamp, not from memory.

Existing midspan bounce and sag are a field measurement first. Compare that to the tabulated beam span second.

Do not cut a beam longer than the table allows and hope. Add a post, change plies, or get engineering.

When the deck also needs stairs, lock the square. Beam span and stringer math are separate.
