What This Number Is (and Is Not)

One board foot is a volume: 1" × 12" × 12", or 144 cubic inches of wood. Yards use that unit so a 1x6x8 and a 2x6x4 can sit on the same price list. The calculator multiplies nominal thickness, nominal width, and length in feet, then divides by 12. That is the ticket math, not the dressed rectangle you measure with a tape after surfacing.

Nominal vs the board in your hand

A surfaced 2x4 is about 1.5" × 3.5". If you feed those actuals into the formula you under-count board feet by roughly 34% and your hardwood quote will not match the yard. Keep 2 and 4 in the boxes unless the mill is selling true-dimension or a slab on actual thickness. Walkthrough: what board feet are and why lumber is priced this way.

Cost is optional on purpose

Plenty of takeoffs only need volume. Leave $/BF blank and the cost row stays an em dash. Fill it when the yard quoted a board-foot rate. Framing studs sold “each” or “per linear foot of 2x4” are a different unit — convert before you compare: board feet vs linear feet.
