What a Roofing Square Is (and How to Measure a Roof)

Why the trade sells and estimates in 100 sq ft units, how pitch grows actual surface vs footprint, and how to measure without using the house listing

The roofing square calculator is a takeoff: footprint or measured planes, X/12 pitch, waste, then squares and bundles. This page is why those units exist and how to feed the tool honest numbers.

Estimating misses: troubleshooting. 3-tab vs laminated coverage: comparison. Framing pitch: rafter length calculator. Roofing index: hub. Attic NFA after the deck is on: attic ventilation calculator. Eave drainage from the same footprint: gutter sizing calculator. Ice barrier at that eave: ice & water shield coverage calculator.

One Square = 100 Square Feet of Roof Surface

GAF states it without poetry: in roofing, one square equals 10 × 10 ft, or 100 sq ft of rooftop. That is the unit on the shingle wrapper, the felt roll, and the labor quote. A 2,520 sq ft deck is 25.2 squares before waste. It is not 25.2 squares of living area, and it is not 25.2 squares of footprint if the roof is steep.

Bundles are how shingles ship. GAF lists three bundles of Timberline HDZ per square. Designer shapes (Grand Sequoia is GAF’s example) can take five. Always read the coverage line on the product you are buying. The calculator defaults to 3 for 3-tab and standard architectural, and 4 when you flip heavy/designer.

Roofing Takeoff Gear

The calculator turns footprint, pitch, and waste into squares and bundles. A coil nailer, chalk line, tear-off shovel, and a rooftop harness are the tools that make the count real on the deck.

Coil roofing nailer

BOSTITCH RN46-1 Coil Roofing Nailer

3/4 in to 1-3/4 in coil nails for asphalt shingles. The calculator counts squares and bundles; the nailer is how those bundles leave the pallet.

Chalk line reel

TAJIMA Chalk-Rite CR301JF Jam Free Chalk Line

Snap starter and course lines on the deck after you know the square count. Extra-bold 1 mm line, 100 ft, five-gear rewind.

Roofing tear-off shovel

Tie Down 47.5 in Roof Ripper Shingle Removal Tool

Serrated tear-off shovel for stripping the old roof before the new squares go down. Measure the deck after tear-off if the old planes were your only numbers.

Roofing fall protection kit

Guardian 00815 Bucket of Safe-Tie Rooftop Kit

Harness, 50 ft lifeline with shock pack, and reusable roof anchor in one bucket. Pitch math does not replace fall protection on the deck.

Magnetic nail sweeper

VEVOR 18-Inch Rolling Magnetic Sweeper

Roll the yard and driveway after tear-off. Loose roofing nails are why the magnet lives in the same truck as the shovel.

Why the Trade Measures This Way

Yards, manufacturers, and crews all talk per square so a 28-square job is one number, not “two thousand eight hundred and something.” Labor is bid per square. Dumpsters are sized by squares of tear-off. A square is small enough to round and large enough that you are not counting individual shingles on a 40-square ranch.

That convention only works if everyone means roof surface. Using the MLS living-area number undercounts overhangs, slope, and extra planes. GAF’s own warning: a 2,200 sq ft home might be a 35-square roof. Measure the deck or the footprint-plus-pitch, not the listing.

How Pitch Grows Surface vs Footprint

A sloped plane is longer than its plan run. For pitch X/12, the slope factor is the hypotenuse over the run:

multiplier = √(1 + (X/12)²) = √(X² + 144) ÷ 12
roof area = plan footprint × multiplier

A 6/12 roof: √(36 + 144) ÷ 12 = 1.118. A 2,000 sq ft footprint is 2,236 sq ft of shingles before waste — 22.36 squares, not 20. A 12/12 is 1.414; the same footprint is 41% more surface. That is the same X/12 the rafter calculator uses for common-rafter length. Framing gives you the pitch; this takeoff applies it to area.

Common shop-wall checks (plan area × factor = sloped area):

Pitch (X/12)MultiplierExtra vs footprint
4/121.0545.4%
6/121.11811.8%
8/121.20220.2%
10/121.30230.2%
12/121.41441.4%

If you already measured each sloped plane with a tape, you already have surface. Do not multiply again. The calculator’s measured-surface mode is for that case.

How to Measure a Roof for Estimating

GAF’s field method: count the planes, measure length and width of each plane on the slope, add them, divide by 100. That is already surface — pitch is in the tape. If you cannot get on the roof, measure the building footprint (including typical eaves), get pitch from the gable or from the rafter tool (rise over 12 of run), and let the multiplier do the slope.

  1. Safety first. If you cannot access the roof safely, do not. Footprint-plus-pitch from the ground is the fallback.
  2. Planes. A simple gable is two rectangles. Hips, valleys, and dormers add planes. Measure each, or split the footprint into pitch zones if pitches differ.
  3. Include the eaves you will shingle. Interior floor area stops at the wall. Shingles do not.
  4. Divide by 100, then add waste. Simple gable ~10%. Hips and a few valleys 12–15%. Cut-up roofs 15%+. Then convert to bundles from the wrapper.
Worked footprint example40 ft × 50 ft plan = 2,000 sq ft. Pitch 6/12, multiplier 1.118. Surface = 2,236 sq ft = 22.36 squares. 15% waste → 25.71 squares. Architectural at 3 bundles/square → 78 bundles after rounding up. Same arithmetic as the calculator.
Pitch from framing, squares from this page. The rafter calculator will not count bundles. This calculator will not cut a birdsmouth. Use both.

FAQ

Is a square the same as a square of living area?

No. Living area is floors. A square is 100 sq ft of roof deck. Slope and eaves make them different numbers.

Do I add waste before or after converting to bundles?

Apply waste to squares (or to surface), then convert to bundles and round bundles up. The calculator does that order.

Does this include hip and ridge cap?

No. Cap is linear feet of hips and ridges, sold in its own bundles. Add it after the field takeoff.
