Roof Snow Load Troubleshooting: Sagging Ridges, Sticking Doors, and When to Call an Engineer

A ridge that droops after a heavy pack, doors that suddenly scrape, cracks at corners — versus the slow, even creep a wood roof can show for decades

The roof snow load calculator sizes a balanced load. This page is the crime scene when that load, or a drift the calculator does not include, is already on the house. Framing that has to carry it: joist span calculator and deck beam span calculator.

What pg vs ps means: guide. Why you must not use ground snow as the roof number: comparison.

If the ridge is moving, get off the snow and get an engineer. Do not keep shoveling from the peak. Do not “wait and see” on a house that is distorting. This page is diagnosis language, not a repair spec.

Know the mapped pg before you argue with a sag.A 28 psf roof on a 40 psf ground is not a math error — run the conversion.

Signs of Snow Load Stress

  • Sagging ridge line that was straight last fall, especially after a heavy, wet pack or a drift against a higher wall.
  • Doors and windows that suddenly stick — the opening racked. Interior doors that never bound in August and bind in February are a frame-distortion tell.
  • New cracking at drywall corners, ceiling/wall joints, and over headers, appearing during or right after the snow, not a year later from humidity.
  • Popping, creaking, or a visible belly in a rafter bay or a porch beam under a roofed deck.
  • Truss plates pulling or split webs — stop, leave the house if it is progressing, call an engineer. That is not a rake job.

Ice-dam leaks at the eave (ceiling stains just inside the wall) are water, not necessarily overload. Different tool: ice & water shield coverage calculator.

Snow-Load Gear

The calculator returns a balanced roof snow load in psf. A roof rake is how you take snow off an existing deck from the ground. CSV rows 400–412 were nailers, vents, gutters, and ice barrier — not snow-removal tools — so these two SKUs are new.

Goplus 21 ft Aluminum Snow Roof Rake

21 ft extendable aluminum rake with wheels and oxford slide. Size the balanced roof snow load first; this is how you take snow off the deck from the ground — not a substitute for an engineer.

Joists Under That Load

IRC joist tables assume 40 psf live. A roof or covered deck in snow country is a different load path — size the snow first.

Table R507.5(1) is 40/10. Tables R507.5(2)–(4) are snow rows this tool does not replace. Convert pg to roof snow, then talk to the table or an engineer.

When It Is Normal Roof Creep

Wood roofs take a little permanent set. An even, long-standing sag that has looked the same for years, with no new cracks and no seasonal change in door fit, is often creep plus original camber — not this week’s snow. A ridge that dropped an inch after one storm is not creep. A porch beam that was cambered up and now sits flat under a 50 psf pack is a load check, not a paint problem.

Covered decks are where the 40 psf IRC cell and real snow part ways. If that deck is under a roof, run pg through the snow calculator, then look at whether Table R507.5(1) in the beam tool was even the right table (snow-country rows are R507.5(2)–(4)).

When to Get a Structural Assessment

  1. Any progressive movement while snow is on the roof. Get people out from under it. Rake from the ground at the eave if you can do it without standing under a belly.
  2. Doors that racked this winter and did not un-stick after melt. The frame moved. That is an engineer, not a plane on the door.
  3. A roof that was never designed for the mapped pg — additions, converted attics, solar + snow, a new drift from a taller neighbor. The calculator’s balanced number is the start of that conversation, not the end.
  4. Do not treat a rake as a structural fix. Taking snow off reduces demand. It does not certify the rafters.
Unbalanced and drift are not in the calculator.A gable can see more on the leeward slope. A step-down roof can see a drift the balanced ps never included. Those are why the banner says engineer.

FAQ

The ridge sagged an inch. Can I just sister the rafters?

Maybe, after someone checks why it moved and what the actual load is. Sistering by eye is how you hide a truss problem. Run pg first, then hire the stamp.

Will a roof rake replace ice barrier?

No. Raking reduces weight and dam size. The eave still needs the R905.1.2 band where Table R301.2 requires it. Ice-barrier calculator.

My joist table says 40 psf. We got 40 psf on the ground. Are we fine?

Ground is not roof. Convert it. Then remember the joist table is a live-load cell, not a snow-load cell. Joist span calculator.
