How to use this calculator

Select your cutting method, material, and thickness. For plasma, enter your machine amperage. Add cut length if you want a project-time estimate, then run the calculator for travel/feed speed guidance.

What results mean

  • Optimal Cutting Speed (IPM): recommended travel/feed rate baseline.
  • Expected Cut Quality: predicted quality band for the entered setup.
  • Total Cutting Time: estimated cutting-only duration using entered length.

Method guidance and FAQs

Why do plasma speeds change so much by thickness?

Plasma travel speed drops sharply as thickness rises because the arc must fully clear material through the kerf. Higher amperage can recover part of that speed loss.

Can oxy-fuel cut stainless or aluminum?

No. Oxy-fuel relies on the iron oxidation reaction and is intended for mild/carbon steel or cast iron, not stainless or aluminum.

What is the best first adjustment when cut quality is poor?

Adjust speed first. Thermal cuts often improve by moving closer to the proper travel speed before changing other settings.

What this calculator does

Estimate cutting travel speed and time for plasma, oxy-fuel, bandsaw, chop saw, and cold saw workflows from material, thickness, and process. Plasma mode factors in machine amperage; optional total cut length turns IPM into minutes on the job. Quality guidance flags when you are likely outrunning the process for the thickness you entered.

What each input means

  • Cutting method: Plasma, oxy-fuel, bandsaw, abrasive chop saw, or carbide cold saw—each uses different speed logic.
  • Material type: Mild steel, stainless, aluminum, copper/brass, or tool steel—affects thermal and mechanical cutting rates.
  • Material thickness: Measured thickness in inches; primary input for speed tables.
  • Plasma cutter amperage: Shown for plasma only; higher amps allow faster travel on the same thickness.
  • Total cut length: Optional inches of cut path for project time estimates (layout perimeter or CNC length).

Using the results on the job

Schedule labor and machine time from the cutting-time output when you have a known cut length; add setup, pierce, and handling minutes separately. On plasma and oxy-fuel, adjust speed first when edge quality is poor—most dross and bevel issues trace to travel speed before amperage. Oxy-fuel is for carbon steel only; do not use those speeds on stainless or aluminum. For saws, treat IPM as feed guidance and listen for blade load—squeal usually means too fast or a dull blade.

When comparing plasma to bandsaw for the same part, run both methods if schedule is tight—thermal cuts need grind time that saws sometimes avoid on square tube. Document SFM or IPM on the router program or shop traveler so night shift matches day shift feeds. For quoting, multiply cutting time by your shop rate and add consumable wear (tips, blades, gas) as a separate line.

Re-run the calculator when you change plate thickness on the same nest—do not copy yesterday’s IPM without checking.
