How to use this calculator

Select material, choose a stock shape, enter dimensions in inches, and set quantity. Optional price-per-pound input adds immediate cost outputs for quoting.

Formula basis

  • Weight = volume × material density
  • Total weight = each weight × quantity
  • Cost = total weight × price per pound

FAQ and related tools

Do I need to add a scrap factor?

Yes. Most shops add roughly 10-15% to the calculated material requirement for cutting and setup waste.

Can this replace material certs for critical jobs?

No. Use this for planning and quoting. For critical applications, confirm certified properties from your supplier.

Why are two stainless options included?

304 and 316 are both common in fabrication and can differ in corrosion performance while sharing similar density for weight estimates.

What this calculator does

Figure out how much a piece of stock weighs before you lift it, quote material, or load a truck. Enter material, shape, and dimensions in inches to get weight per piece, total weight for quantity, volume, and surface area. Optional price per pound rolls up a quick material cost for estimates and purchase orders.

What each input means

  • Metal material: Density preset for mild steel, stainless grades, aluminum, copper, brass, and other common shop metals.
  • Quantity: Number of identical pieces; multiplies single-piece weight for cut lists and nesting jobs.
  • Shape: Sheet, flat bar, round bar, round tube, square tube, or angle—switches the dimension fields to match how you buy stock.
  • Length, width, thickness, diameter, OD, wall, leg size: Actual measured dimensions in inches, not nominal gauge names.
  • Price per pound: Supplier or scrap-market rate for optional cost per piece and total material dollars.

Using the results on the job

Use total weight to pick hoist capacity, forklift pockets, and rack load limits before the plate hits the table. Add 10–15% scrap factor on quotes when you have burns, drops, and test pieces. Cross-check one known piece on a scale occasionally—density tables are close for estimating, but billing and rigging sometimes need a real weight.

Tube and angle entries need accurate wall and leg dimensions—a quarter-inch error on thick wall pipe changes weight noticeably on long lengths. Surface area output helps when you are estimating paint, galvanizing, or blast coverage per piece. For mixed-material carts, run each alloy separately; do not assume all stainless is the same density if you switch between 304 and 316.

When quoting freight, round total weight up and list alloy on the paperwork. Pair with the pipe and tube weight tool for hollow sections you buy by the foot but model as round tube in this calculator.
