Understanding Cutting Speed and Feed Rate

Cutting speed and feed rate drive tool life, finish quality, and cycle time. This calculator outputs starter values for spindle speed, feed rate, chip load, and surface speed so you can tune quickly on the machine.

Core formulas used

  • RPM = (SFM x 12) / (pi x tool diameter)
  • Feed Rate = Chip Load x Flutes x RPM
  • Custom SFM override is supported when shop standards differ.

Practical guidance

Start with the calculated values, make a short test cut, and adjust based on chip shape, finish, spindle load, and heat. Consistent chips and stable sound generally indicate healthy parameters.

FAQ and Related Calculators

Why do carbide values run much faster than HSS?

Carbide tolerates higher heat and maintains edge hardness at higher cutting speeds, enabling faster SFM and feed rates on rigid setups.

What if my chips turn to dust?

Dust-like chips usually indicate rubbing. Increase feed per tooth or reduce RPM to restore positive chip formation.
