What this calculator does

This calculator provides starting parameters for pipe groove welds based on pipe schedule (wall thickness), nominal diameter, base material, and welding process. It outputs bevel angle, root face, root opening, root pass amperage, electrode/filler selection, and a complete pass sequence for your wall thickness.

These are starting points — not a substitute for a qualified Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). On code work (AWS D1.1, ASME B31.1, B31.3), you must weld to an approved WPS.

Pipe schedule determines wall thicknessNominal pipe size (NPS) is a naming convention — not the actual outside diameter. Schedule 40 2" NPS pipe has an actual OD of 2.375" and a wall thickness of 0.154". The wall thickness drives amperage and pass count — not the OD.

Understanding pipe schedules

  • Schedule 10 — thin wall, low-pressure distribution. Lighter parameters; burn-through risk on root.
  • Schedule 40 — standard weight. Most pipe welding certification tests use Sch 40.
  • Schedule 80 — extra heavy. More fill passes; common in plants and refineries.
  • Schedule 160 / XXH — heavy wall. Multiple fill passes; formal WPS typically required.

Process selection guide

  • SMAW Root / SMAW Fill — E6010 root, E7018 fill and cap. Standard for structural pipe per AWS D1.1.
  • GTAW Root / SMAW Fill — TIG root, SMAW fill. Standard on pressure pipe per ASME B31.1 and B31.3.
  • All GTAW — highest quality on critical pressure piping.
  • SMAW Root / FCAW Fill — higher deposition on heavy wall. Verify your WPS allows FCAW.

Frequently asked questions

Do these parameters replace a WPS?
No. On code-governed pipe welding, weld to a qualified WPS. This calculator gives starting points for practice and field reference.

Why does wall thickness matter more than pipe diameter?
Amperage is determined by the metal you're melting — primarily wall thickness. A 2" Schedule 160 pipe can require higher amperage than a 12" Schedule 10 pipe.

What's the difference between 5G and 6G?
5G is horizontal fixed pipe. 6G is 45° inclined fixed — the certification test that qualifies you for all positions.
