How to Use This Roofing Square Calculator

Enter the plan footprint (length and width, or total area) and the roof pitch as X/12. The tool multiplies footprint by the pitch factor, divides by 100 to get squares, then applies waste and converts to bundles and underlayment rolls. If you already taped each sloped plane, switch to measured surface so pitch is not applied twice.

multiplier = √(1 + (X/12)²)
roof area = footprint × multiplier
squares = roof area ÷ 100
with waste = squares × (1 + waste%)
bundles = ceil(with waste × bundles per square)

What This Number Is (and Is Not)

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Manufacturers and yards quote shingles, felt, and labor per square because a 10×10 unit is easier to talk than 2,236 sq ft. This calculator is a takeoff: surface from footprint and pitch, then bundles from the coverage printed on typical wrappers.

Assumptions baked into every result

Pitch is constant across the footprint you entered. One pitch zone only. Overhangs are in only if you put them in the length and width. Bundles use 3 per square for 3-tab and standard architectural, 4 for the heavy/designer toggle. Underlayment uses 10 / 4 / 2 squares per roll and does not subtract side laps. Hip and ridge cap, starter, ice-and-water, and valley metal are not in the bundle count.

Do not use the house’s living-area square footage.GAF is explicit: a 2,200 sq ft home is not a 22-square roof. Overhangs, slope, and extra planes grow the deck. Measure footprint or planes, not the listing.

When this tool is the wrong tool

Common rafter length, plumb cuts, and birdsmouth layout belong in the rafter length calculator. This page will not size a hip rafter or tell you remaining rafter depth. Tile, metal panel, and cedar shake coverage is not 3 bundles per square. Low-slope roofs that need a membrane, not asphalt shingles, are a different takeoff.
