Metal Roofing Panel Calculator

Panel count and linear footage from net coverage width, custom mill-cut length, pitch multiplier, and waste — not shingle bundles

Standing seam and exposed-fastener panels are sold by the piece, usually cut to the roof run. This calculator seeds common coverage widths (16 in standing seam, 36 in MBCI PBR, 24 in corrugated/5V), multiplies plan area by the same pitch factor as the shingle tool, and applies a metal-appropriate waste pad. Always edit coverage to match the manufacturer data sheet — overall sheet width will short the order.

Use manufacturer net coverage width — not overall sheet width. Metal is sold by the panel, usually mill-cut to length. This calculator applies the same pitch multiplier as the shingle square tool (√(1+(rise/run)²)), then divides roof surface by each panel’s net coverage area (coverage width × panel length). Presets: standing seam ~16 in coverage (common residential range 12–18 in), exposed R-panel/PBR 36 in (MBCI published coverage), corrugated/5V ~24 in net. Confirm the data sheet for your profile. Waste for custom mill-cut is often 5–10% on simple gables and 10–15% on cut-up roofs — typically lower than asphalt because panels are ordered to length. Not a permit, not a trim takeoff, not a structural snow-load calc.

How to Use This Metal Roofing Panel Calculator

Enter plan length and width plus pitch (or a measured surface area), pick standing seam / R-panel / corrugated to seed coverage width, type the mill-cut panel length, and set waste. The calculator multiplies footprint by the pitch factor, divides by each panel’s net coverage area, applies waste, and rounds up to whole panels — then prints total linear footage.

Panels = ceil( roof sq ft × (1 + waste%) × 144 / (coverage inches × panel length feet) )

What This Number Is (and Is Not)

The panel count is a coverage-width takeoff for the surface area and waste you typed. It is not a shingle square. It is not MBCI’s trim list. It is not permission to skip the manufacturer’s published coverage width on the data sheet.

Why metal math is not shingle math

Asphalt is sold by the square (100 sq ft) and the bundle. Metal is sold by the panel — usually custom-cut to the eave-to-ridge length. Side-lap coverage width, not overall sheet width, sets how many panels fit across an eave. That is why this calculator does not reuse the shingle-bundle worksheet.

Trim is a separate lineal.Ridge, hip, valley, eave, gable, and sidewall flashings are ordered in linear feet. Shorting trim is how jobs stall with panels already on the roof.

Metal Panel Install Gear

A coverage-width takeoff is a number until you cut, seam, and fasten the panels. Snips, a hand seamer, and painted hex-washer screws are how standing seam and exposed-fastener roofs leave the truck.

Self-tapping hex-washer head screws with sealing washers for exposed-fastener / R-panel installs. Standing seam uses concealed clips instead — still keep stitch screws for trim.
