BuyWPS vs PQR, essential variables, JSON load failures, and PDF gating
Diagnose WPS vs PQR confusion, untagged essential variables, JSON load errors, and required fields that block PDF export in the WPS Builder.
Most problems are confusion about qualification vs formatting, or incomplete required fields.
Open WPS Builder → WPS vs PQR →A PQR (Procedure Qualification Record) documents the test weld and results that qualify a procedure. A WPS specifies the production parameters welders follow for a procedure that has been qualified. This tool builds a WPS layout — it does not create or replace a PQR. Enter your supporting PQR number in Identification if you have one; the tool never validates it. See WPS vs PQR — Relationship Explained.
ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1 define essential, nonessential, and supplementary-essential variables with specific tables (e.g., QW-250). This tool deliberately does not tag fields against those tables — every field is free-form documentation. For code compliance, use the official code form and a qualified reviewer (CWI, welding engineer) who maps your variables to the applicable tables.
If load fails with “Could not read that file”, the file is not a WPS Builder export. Valid files contain "_type": "testtalkhq-wps" and a fields object. Re-export from a working session or fix corrupted JSON. Loading a partial file from another tool will not work.
PDF export requires: Company / Shop name, WPS number, at least one welding process, and Base metal group. The error message lists whatever is missing. Fill those fields and try again — Save (.json) works even when required fields are incomplete, but PDF does not.
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Red error on PDF click | Required field empty | Complete listed fields |
| Load fails | Wrong or corrupt JSON | Use a .json from Save (.json) |
| “Qualified” on shop floor without review | Template mistaken for PQR | Qualify per code; read WPS vs PQR guide |
| P-No. / F-No. don’t match code tables | Free-text fields, no validation | Verify against code & mill cert |
AWS code books and official WPS/PQR form pads are common shop references for procedure documentation.
