WPS vs PQR — Relationship Explained

Qualification record and procedure specification work together — not either/or

PQR qualifies the procedure; WPS specifies how to weld per the qualified procedure. A clear explainer of their sequential, complementary roles — not an alternatives decision.

This is not an either/or decision

PQR and WPS serve different roles in the same qualification workflow — you typically need both, in sequence.

What a PQR Does

A Procedure Qualification Record documents the test coupon, variables used, test results (tensile, bend, etc.), and acceptance per the applicable code. The PQR is the evidence that a welding procedure works and meets code requirements. It is produced during qualification testing — not by filling out a template alone.

What a WPS Does

A Welding Procedure Specification tells production welders the parameters to use — amperage, filler, preheat, pass sequence, and so on — within the bounds established by the qualifying PQR. The WPS is the shop-facing document on the weldment or in the traveler.

How They Work Together

The usual sequence: qualify a procedure → record results on a PQR → write a WPS that references the supporting PQR(s) and stays within qualified ranges. They are complementary, not alternatives. Choosing “PQR or WPS” is the wrong question — ask whether you have completed qualification (PQR) and whether production has a written procedure (WPS) tied to it.

TestTalkHQ WPS Builder: Formats WPS parameters into a PDF template. It does not qualify a procedure and is not a substitute for a PQR or code review.

Reference Materials

AWS code books and official WPS/PQR form pads are common shop references for procedure documentation.

Catalog gap: No AWS D1.1 code books or WPS/PQR form pads exist in the TestTalkHQ affiliate CSV at publish time — we do not substitute unrelated products.
