Mini-Split vs Central Air: Which to Use

Compare ductless mini-split vs central air on retrofit cost, ductwork, zoning flexibility, and when each system is the right call for your home

Size ductless heads with the mini-split sizing calculator. Method: guide. Field failures: troubleshooting. Charts: BTU chart. Whole-home tons: BTU tonnage calculator. Hub: HVAC tools.

Starting point only — not ACCA Manual J, Manual S, or a contractor load calculation. This tool estimates cooling BTU from climate midpoints, insulation, ceiling height, sun exposure, and occupants, then rounds each zone up to a common indoor-unit size. It does not account for window area, orientation, infiltration, latent load, or manufacturer capacity tables at your design outdoor temperature. Oversizing short-cycles and leaves humidity; undersizing never reaches set point. Use this to frame a quote — then pay for a real load calc before you buy.

Weigh retrofit reality, not brochure SEER alone. Ducts vs line sets change the job.

Ductless Mini-Split — Zoning Without Ducts

Indoor heads mount on walls, ceilings, or floors and connect to outdoor units with refrigerant line sets. No trunk duct required for the rooms you serve.

Wins: Retrofit into homes without usable duct chases; room-by-room zoning; additions, garages, and bonus rooms; avoiding a full duct redesign when the existing air handler is wrong for one wing.

Costs: Visible heads; multiple wall penetrations; multi-zone combination limits; each closed bedroom usually needs its own head; aesthetics and condensate routing matter.

Use ductless when: ducts are missing, crushed, or not worth rebuilding, and you can accept heads in the rooms that must stay comfortable with doors closed.

Central Air — One System, Hidden Distribution

A single outdoor condenser (or heat pump) pairs with a ducted air handler or furnace coil. Supply registers hit many rooms from one plant.

Wins: Invisible distribution when ducts are already right; whole-home filtration and humidity control on one coil; familiar service path; often lower cost per ton when ducts exist and are sealed.

Costs: Bad ducts kill efficiency and comfort; zoning needs dampers or multiple air handlers; retrofit ductwork in plaster homes is expensive; one wrong tonnage affects the whole house.

Use central when: ducts are present and repairable, you want whole-home filtration, and room-by-room heads are not desired.

How to Choose on a Real Job

  1. Audit ducts. If trunks are missing or condemned, ductless (or a ducted mini-split air handler) jumps ahead.
  2. List closed-door rooms that must hold setpoint overnight.
  3. Price both paths with honest line-set vs duct repair scope — not SEER stickers alone.
  4. Size ductless with the mini-split calculator; size central with the tonnage calculator, then Manual J for the buy.
  5. Hybrid is allowed: central for the main floor, ductless for the addition is a common, sane mix.

FAQ

Are mini-splits always more efficient?

Inverter ductless can be very efficient, but leaky line-set installs and oversized heads erase the advantage. Central with sealed ducts and correct tonnage competes hard.

Can one mini-split replace the whole furnace?

Sometimes in mild climates with enough heads and cold-climate heat pumps. In cold Zone 5 winters, dual-fuel or a furnace backup is still common — check heating tables, not just cooling midpoints.

Where do sizing mistakes show up?

Mini-split sizing problems and oversized vs undersized AC.
