BuyEducational service life estimates for welding and fabrication respiratory protection
Select cartridge type, contaminant concentration, relative humidity, work rate, and shift length to estimate when cartridges should be changed. The calculator applies humidity derating and breathing-rate scaling, and displays mandatory breakthrough change rules that always override schedule-based estimates.

Engineering controls — local exhaust ventilation — are the preferred method for welding fume control. When ventilation cannot reduce exposure below permissible limits, or during confined-space and maintenance work, respirators become necessary. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires a written respiratory protection program, medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and cartridge change schedules. This calculator supports planning discussions; your IH or safety officer sets official change intervals.
Organic vapor (OV) cartridges adsorb solvent and hydrocarbon vapors. Acid gas (AG) cartridges handle chlorine, sulfur dioxide, and related gases. Multi-gas cartridges combine OV and AG media for mixed exposures. P100 filters capture particulate including welding fume; they do not remove gases. Many welding applications need combination cartridges (P100 plus OV) when both particulate and ozone/vapor are present. Match cartridge approval markings to your hazard assessment.
Cartridge change schedules must never override breakthrough rules. Change immediately if you detect odor, taste, irritation, or breathing resistance increase (for particulate filters). End-of-shift change is mandatory for many gas cartridges regardless of estimated life. High humidity reduces adsorption capacity for OV media — store cartridges sealed and rotate stock. Never use cartridges beyond manufacturer service life or after unknown exposure.
Relative humidity above 65% significantly reduces organic vapor cartridge life because moisture competes for adsorption sites. Heavy work increases breathing rate, pulling more contaminant through the cartridge per hour — effective life shortens even at the same ambient concentration. This calculator applies simplified derating factors for education. Manufacturer software and OSHA APFs provide more precise program values when concentration data is known.
The best respiratory program reduces reliance on cartridges through source capture. Size ventilation with the fume CFM calculator, then use respirators for residual risk, confined entry, or when engineering controls are impractical. Cross-reference process-specific PPE in our selection guide — stick and flux-core typically generate more fume than TIG, driving both ventilation and cartridge choices.
