Torque Unit Conversion Chart

ft-lb · Nm · in-lb — dense shop reference tables

Convert between foot-pounds, Newton-meters, and inch-pounds without a calculator. Built for fastener torque specs, tap torque notes, and dual-scale wrenches.

Conversion Factors

Torque specs show up in foot-pounds (ft-lb), Newton-meters (Nm), and inch-pounds (in-lb). Use these factors, or look up values directly in the tables below.

1 ft-lb= 1.35582 Nm
= 12 in-lb
1 Nm= 0.73756 ft-lb
= 8.85075 in-lb
1 in-lb= 0.08333 ft-lb
= 0.11298 Nm

For grade- and size-specific fastener torque, use the Bolt Torque Calculator. For tapping, see the Tap Torque Calculator.

Quick Mental Math

ft-lb to Nm: multiply by 1.36 (close enough for most fab work). Nm to ft-lb: multiply by 0.74. ft-lb to in-lb: multiply by 12. Small fasteners (electronics, sensors, thin sheet hardware) are almost always specified in in-lb — do not apply a 50 ft-lb wrench to a 50 in-lb spec.

Dry vs lubricated: Unit conversion does not change lubrication condition. A lubed bolt reaches the same preload at roughly 60–75% of dry torque. Convert units first, then apply the lubrication factor from your torque chart or calculator.
