Roofing Underlayment Coverage Calculator

Field felt or synthetic roll count from roof area, pitch-based single/double coverage, and waste — not ice-and-water shield

Every asphalt-shingle roof needs underlayment over the entire deck. This calculator sizes 15# felt, 30# felt, or synthetic rolls from your roof area, applies IRC double coverage on low slopes (under 4:12), adds waste, and uses effective roll coverage after standard overlaps. Ice-and-water shield at eaves, valleys, and penetrations is a separate product — use the ice & water shield calculator for that band.

Guide: underlayment guide. Mistakes: troubleshooting. 15# vs 30# vs synthetic: comparison. Ice barrier vs field layer: existing comparison. Hub: roofing calculators.

Planning / estimating only — starting point, not gospel. Not a permit, not a substitute for the adopted code in your jurisdiction. 2018 IRC §R905.1.1 requires underlayment on asphalt-shingle roofs. Low-slope sections (2:12 to under 4:12) require double underlayment or equivalent double coverage. This tool sizes field underlayment (felt or synthetic) over the entire deck. It does not include self-adhering ice-and-water shield at eaves, valleys, or penetrations — use the ice & water shield calculator for that separate band. Confirm product labels, overlap requirements, and local amendments before you order.

How to Use This Underlayment Calculator

Enter total roof deck area in squares or square feet. Pick pitch category: under 4:12 triggers double coverage (IRC low-slope rule); 4:12 and steeper uses single-layer field coverage. Choose 15# felt, 30# felt, or synthetic and set waste (10% default, up to 15% for cut-up roofs). The calculator outputs total effective square feet and roll count using published effective coverage after overlap.

Total = deck sq ft × layers × (1 + waste%)   ·   Rolls = ceil(total / effective sq ft per roll)

This is field underlayment only. Ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys: ice-barrier calculator. Product choice: 15# vs 30# vs synthetic. Install: guide. Mistakes: troubleshooting.

What This Number Is (and Is Not)

The roll count is a field-underlayment takeoff for the deck area you typed, with low-slope double coverage and waste baked in. It is not ice-and-water shield at the eave band. It is not shingle squares or drip edge lineal feet. The square calculator bundles a quick underlayment estimate with shingles — this tool is the dedicated field-layer worksheet with pitch-based doubling and overlap-adjusted roll sizes.

Why ice-and-water shield is separate

Self-adhering peel-and-stick membrane is required at eaves, valleys, and penetrations in cold-climate jurisdictions (IRC R905.1.2 where Table R301.2 designates). It covers a band, not the whole deck. Field underlayment (felt or synthetic) covers everything upslope. Both go on the same job — use both calculators.

Low-slope doubling is real.A porch or shed wing at 3:12 on an otherwise steep house still needs double underlayment on that section. If the whole roof is low-slope, the roll count roughly doubles vs single-layer math.

Need the eave membrane band next?Ice barrier width is measured from the wall line, not total deck area.
