BuyWhen the CFM calculator looked fine — but the plume still hits the hood
Use this when the Welding Fume Ventilation CFM Calculator sized an arm or booth and capture still fails. LEV vs dilution and when respirators still apply live in the Fume Ventilation Guide. Cartridge failures: Respirator Cartridge Troubleshooting. Process PPE matrix: PPE Selection by Process. Shop compressed-air tools: cfm calculator.
Most “we have CFM” failures are the hood too far from the plume, dilution fans mistaken for LEV, recirculation without filtration, clogged filters cutting real airflow, cross-drafts beating capture velocity, or stainless/galvanized work treated like mild-steel booth settings.
| Symptom | What it usually means | First fix | Next tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smoke test bypasses hood | Distance / angle / cross-draft | Move hood to plume; block drafts | CFM Calculator |
| Shop “ventilated”; welder still exposed | Dilution only — no source capture | Add LEV; don’t raise general fans alone | Fume Guide |
| Arm used to work; now weak | Filter/duct restriction — CFM lost | Check ΔP / clean filters; re-measure | Smoke test + IH if needed |
| LEV on; still need respirator symptoms | Residual risk / wrong metals | Keep respirator program; check metals | Cartridge Troubleshooting |
| Outdoor OK; booth fails | Enclosure + multiple arcs overload | Re-size booth CFM; reduce concurrent arcs | Guide CFM thinking |
What it looks like: Rated CFM on the fan plate; smoke rises past the welder’s breathing zone.
Fixes: Capture at the plume — typically inches, not feet. Reposition every joint. Calculator CFM assumes the hood is actually used.
What it looks like: Roof fans or open doors “ventilate” the shop; welder still breathes the plume.
Fixes: Treat dilution as background only. Primary control is LEV — see guide LEV vs dilution.
What it looks like: New install worked; months later capture dies though the fan still spins.
Fixes: Inspect filters, blast gates, and crushed flex duct. Re-smoke-test after service. Nameplate CFM ≠ delivered CFM.
What it looks like: Door/fan wind pulls the plume away from the arm.
Fixes: Relocate drafts or enclose; increase capture or move closer. Don’t just raise fan RPM into a dirty duct.
What it looks like: Mild-steel booth settings used on hex-chrome or zinc-fume jobs.
Fixes: Tighten LEV, update IH, and respirator selection per SDS — guide “metals that change the conversation.”
What it looks like: “We have an arm” used to drop the respirator program.
Fixes: Hierarchy still applies. Diagnose cartridges separately on cartridge troubleshooting; choose process PPE via PPE selection guide.
Article 3 SKIPPED: LEV vs dilution and the control hierarchy already live in the Fume Ventilation Guide. Respirator/PPE decision matrices live in the PPE Selection Guide by Process and cartridge guide.
Chart SKIPPED: CFM sizing is the calculator; guide explains the CFM thinking. No unique 400+ word chart dataset beyond those.

Five CSV catalog picks with verified images. Flag: no P100 particulate filter / welding-fume cartridge rows with images were present — OV cartridges alone are not a welding-fume solution; pair with employer-approved particulate media.

No. That page diagnoses cartridge/seal failures. This page diagnoses LEV/CFM capture failures before and beside PPE.
Often yes for residual risk and high-toxicity metals — follow IH data and the fume guide.
